re: The Stone Guard 10 Man

The first boss in Mogu'shan vaults is 4 Quillen Guard dogs called The Stone Guard. During the encounter on 10 man 3 out of 4 of the dogs will be active rotating from week to week. The guards each share a health pool and both shared and individual abilities that the raid will need to be aware of.

The biggest shared abilities to watch out for is Petrification and Overload. Each quillen has an energy bar that starts out at zero and somewhat quickly builds to 100. When one of the quillen hits 100 energy they cast Overload which does a heavy AoE that hits the entire raid. One of the quillen will also throughout the fight cast petrification. Petrification is a spell that stacks up and when it reaches 100 stacks the entire raid is petrified, essentially causing a wipe. The Quillen only build energy if within 12 yards of another quillen. If no quillen is within 12 yards, the quillen gets a buff called Solid Stone, taking 90% less damage from all sources but at the same time not building energy. The trick with this is to have one tank always with 2 quillen and other tank has 1. The tanks will have to switch them out depending on which one is petrifying or if one quillen is getting too high in energy. The reason for this is the quillen petrifying does 90% less damage with its abilities including Overload. Also Overload interupts the petrification cast. The ideal situation is for the tanks to rotate out the quillen in such a way that ONLY the petrifying quillen ever gets to full energy and overloads.

The quillen also each have their own unique abilities we shall cover here:
Jasper Guardian: Jasper Chains. This ability will chain two raid members together. The two chained raid members MUST as quickly as possible get within 10 yards of each other. Every second your more then 10 yards apart the chains do 35000 fire damage, stacking up 15% damage per second, until 15 total seconds apart in which case the chains are broken. Chained members should remain within 10 yards of each other until Jasper Guardian casts Petrification and even then ONLY if there is sufficient time (15 seconds) to break the chains as during the petrification casts the chains will do 90% less damage.
Jade Guardian: Jade Shards. This is an AoE attack causing 50000 damage to all raid members. This ability will do 90% less damage during Jade's Petrification.
Cobalt Guardian: Cobalt Mine. This ability the quillen will throw an ice shard at a players location. The mine then takes 3 seconds to arm. After that any player within 7 yards will detonate the mine cause 175000 arcane damage AND rooting any players within 7 yards for 6 seconds. Ability does 90% less damage during Cobalt Guardians petrification. During petrification dps may run and activate the mines to clear them out and make more room.
Amethyst Guardian: Amethyst Pool. This ability leaves small purple puddles on the floor inflicting 60000 damage every second it is stand in. The puddle will last 1.33 minutes. DO NOT STAND IN THEM! The pools will do 90% less damage during Amethyst Petrification.

This explains the abilities of the guardians and the general idea of the fight. Next post will have general strategy.

re: The Stone Guard 10 Man Strategies.

This section will explain how we've been doing The Stone Guard on 10 man. With any luck these two posts will help immensely cut down wipes on this encounter. The two tanks will come up opposite sides of the carpet where two guardians will be on one side and one guardian will be on the other. When the tanks pull give about 5 seconds for aggro then DPS will begin on the target of the tank with the two guardians. The single guardian only takes 10% damage therefore it is not advised to beat on that one. The bosses health pool is shared therefore AoEs will help down the bosses more quickly. When we pull the melee should be on the side with the 2 quillen while the ranged and healers stand on the carpet in the middle. Be sure to avoid damage from all the individual abilities the Guardians will cast as they are being battled.

After a short time in the fight one of the Stone Guard will begin to petrify. At this point the tanks need to be aware of which Guardian/s they are tanking. If the petrifying guardian is already with the tank that has 2 quillen then you simply hold them until roughly 35-40 energy at which point the tank with 2 will taunt the quillen that is with the single tank and the single tank will taunt the quillen that is with the 2 quillen tank that IS NOT petrifying. If everything went according to plan the petrifying guardian will overload while the other guardians are sitting about 35-45 energy.

If you have an unlucky pull the single tanks quillen will cast petrification first. in that situation the tanks will immediately switch out their guardians,(2 guardian tank will taunt the single guardian while the single tank will taunt one or the other or the two guardians over to him. Let the energy build up until roughly 50-70 before switching guardians again. This time the 2guardian tank will taunt the single guardian while the single guardian will taunt the 2 guardian tank's guardian that IS NOT petrifying. If everything went well the petrifying guardian will be the only one to overload while the others are >75 energy.

The next and all following petrifications will involve balancing the energy of the 3 in order to ensure that only the petrifying guardian casts overload. Some examples of the times when to switch out and when not to:
Guardian 1=15 en \
Guardian 2=65 en /Tank 1
Guardian 3=45 en - Tank 2
If Guardian 2 begins to petrify, no tank switch is needed.
If guardian 3 begins to petrify, Tank 1 taunts Guardian 3 while Tank 2 taunts Guardian 2.
If Guardian 1 begins to petrify, then your in trouble. You can try to shift Guardian 2 and 3 around but in the end you will likely end up allowing Guardian 2 to overload by using cooldowns and heavy healing in order to reset the energy on that guardian.
